Enough is enough! Arsenal must replace Wenger with Allegri

The Gunners have offered the Frenchman a contract extension but he needs to step aside, and the Juventus coach is the perfect replacement

COMMENT
Albert Einstein reasoned that the definition of insanity was "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Watching the same thing over and over again can be just as maddening. Ask any Arsenal fan, a group now driven demented by Arsene Wenger's refusal to either alter his famed footballing philosophy - or hand over the reins to someone else.
As one banner at Chelsea on Saturday read, "Enough is Enough, Time to Go." The Gunners supporter holding the placard was dismissed as "an idiot" by Gary Neville but desperate people do stupid things
"Arsene Wenger doesn’t deserve that," the former Manchester United defender-turned-pundit argued. "Obviously, the Arsenal fans are disappointed, but to pre-empt [a defeat] by bringing a banner into the ground is a joke."
Wenger, a three-time Premier League winner, does indeed deserve better but surely the more salient point here was that the "idiot" in question could make his banner beforehand, safe in the knowledge that his side would indeed self-destruct at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal fan enough is enough banner
There is no more damning indictment of Wenger's Arsenal. Gooners had seen this game before. Too many times. Consequently, they want to see change, evolution, but the sad truth is that once revolutionised English football, the mastermind behind the greatest team the Premier League has ever seen, has run out of ideas.
Time waits for no man and Wenger's time is up. According to Goal sources, Wenger is still weighing up a two-year contract extension that former defender However, as the ex-England international told BT Sport, "I'm not sure that will sit well with the fans."

It won't. Not at all. They are, like many Americans right now, so disillusioned, so desperate for change, that they would entrust their futures into the hands of a power-hungry madman.
Luckily for Arsenal, though, it need not come to that. Goal understands that Massimiliano Allegri could quit Juventus this summer - and the 49-year-old is the ideal coach for the Gunners.
Allegri is, for the most part, a calm, composed character. However, he is not afraid to take risks. He is the right kind of 'crazy' for Arsenal.

After watching his troops turn in a tepid performance in a 2-1 defeat at Fiorentina earlier this month, Allegri decided enough was enough, it was time for a change.
Juve were still top of Serie A, and already safely through to the last 16 of the Champions League, but he detected an air of complacency among his players. So, to shake things up, Allegri ditched the 3-5-2 system that had served him and predecessor Antonio Conte so well, and fielded an adventurous 4-2-3-1 formation in Juve's very next outing, against Lazio.
"I am not much of a theorist," Allegri admitted after a commanding 2-0 win in Turin, "but every now and then I come up with a mad idea and try it on the pitch. The important thing is to be sure what you’re doing.
The results certainly suggest that the former AC Milan coach knows what he is doing: Juve have won four games in a row in all competitions, conceding just one goal in the process.
Allegri has stacked more attacking players in the starting line-up - yet managed to solidify his side in the process - and there was a nice symmetry in Juve winning their third successive Serie A game with their new formation on the same weekend that Arsenal suffered yet another humiliating loss to Chelsea.
Massimiliano Allegri record PS
Allegri regularly likes to say that, "A coach should do as little damage as possible" to his team. When he succeeded Conte at the helm in 2014, he took over a side that had won three consecutive Scudetti - yet Allegri has made Juve better, as evidenced by the way in which he led a side that had struggled in Europe to the final of the Champions League at the end of his first season in charge.
Allegri had a tough act to follow but actually improved Juve. He is still improving Juve. Wenger, by contrast, is hurting Arsenal, and their fans.

He knows it, too. He is an astute man - and that is why he is stalling over signing that new contract. The Frenchman wants to see how the season finishes but the league is already gone for another year and he needs to accept that he is not the man to regain it. It would be sad to see him endure another campaign like this, given everything he has given to Arsenal, and English football.
Wenger needs to do right by his club, and its supporters, and step aside to allow Arsenal to move for Allegri. To do otherwise would be the definition of insanity.

'Rooney's time at Man Utd is finished' - Ince urges forward to leave Old Trafford

The former Red Devil thinks Rooney's time is up with the club, but feels he still has a lot to offer in the English top-flight
Paul Ince believes that Wayne Rooney's "time at Manchester United is finished" as the forward is no longer a guaranteed starter at Old Trafford.
Ince spent six seasons with United, lifting two Premier League titles under Alex Ferguson, before leaving for Inter Milan.

The former England international feels that Rooney still has something to offer and should not be left to watch from the bench.
"If I was in his position, at his age, there’s absolutely no chance I’d stay at Manchester United," Ince wrote in his Paddy Power column.
"Rooney is 31 and still has a lot to offer. He wants to play football, and wants to play every game. His time at Man United is finished if they can’t offer him that anymore. He’s too good to be a bit-part player and it’s time for him to move on from Manchester United."
Ince has also hit out at Rooney's critics for suggesting that he has declined and can no longer play at the highest level.
Rooney has just two Premier League goals this season, having made just eight starts under Jose Mourinho.
"People shouldn’t even be suggesting that Wayne Rooney is finished in football," the 49-year-old continued.
"It’s disrespectful to even suggest that. He is world class, and has proven that time and time again at the highest level.
"There’s been talk of a move to China or to the MLS, but he still has plenty more to give to top-flight English football. If Jose Mourinho said he was available, there should be plenty of Premier League top half clubs who would jump to sign him.

The band's back together: Fab Four of Coutinho, Mane, Firmino and Lallana can restore Liverpool’s beat

At Hull City, the Reds are set to end a three-month period - spanning 12 Premier League games - without their explosive quartet operating in tandem

COMMENT
Ninety days, 18 fixtures and five defeats later, Jurgen Klopp can finally field his formidable attacking foursome from the off again for Liverpool.

Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana have not featured together since the 6-1 demolition of Watford at the start of November.
HD Liverpool Firmino Coutinho Lallana Mane
At Anfield on that afternoon, five of the goals directly came from one of the above: Senegal international Mane scored the first and the fourth, England’s Player of the Year Lallana recorded two assists, Coutinho was on the scoresheet and set up the opener, while his fellow Brazilian Firmino bagged one and was the supplier for two more.
The fluency between the front three, with Lallana superbly supporting them from midfield, was the Liverpool asset opposition managers most referenced being troubled by during the opening months of the campaign.
Beyond their exceptional quality on the ball, the quartet are also synchronised by their affinity for pressuring their markers into ceding possession.
HD Liverpool Jurgen Klopp
And at Hull City on Saturday, Klopp is set to end a three-month period - spanning 12 Premier League encounters - without having the full extent of that chemistry and cohesion through injury and other enforced absences.

The ankle ligament damage Coutinho suffered in the 2-0 win over Sunderland was compounded by Lallana’s struggle with a groin issue. The latter, not at 100 per cent sharpness, replaced Mane who had taken a knock after 68 minutes in the 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth.
The first loss of the season, away to Burnley, came with the £30 million summer signing missing out through a shoulder injury.
HD Sadio Mane Phil Coutinho
His subsequent departure to the Africa Cup of Nations at the turn of the year then meant Liverpool were without their direct, daring speedster as well as their ‘gold dust’ in Coutinho.
And it also saw Lallana, so effective in midfield, operating further ahead on occasion, lessening his influence on proceedings.
Incredibly, Klopp has only been able to start all four attackers together seven times in the Premier League, with six wins as well as a draw at Tottenham recorded in those fixtures.

And in the 2-1 victory away to Swansea, they were only on the pitch at the same time for 23 minutes as Lallana was replaced through injury.
With 29 top-flight goals between them this season, it’s applaudable that Liverpool are one point off second in the standings despite the limited availability of their collective powers.
HD Roberto Firmino
In fact, 24 of the Reds' 52 successful attempts at goal in the league were registered when all four were named in the starting XI.
Of course, Liverpool's worries during a most miserable January was not all down to the absence of Firmino, Coutinho, Mane and Lallana featuring in tandem.
Jordan Henderson’s battle with a persistent heel problem as well as Joel Matip’s troublesome ankle, plus his AFCON wrangle with Cameroon, did not help during a nine-game month, which saw fatigue increase while form did the opposite.
But if Liverpool are to finish “as strong as possible” as per their manager’s demand, their fab four will be instrumental in ensuring the sun comes out after a long cold lonely winter.

Arsenal Team News: Injuries, suspensions and line-up vs Chelsea

Everything you need to know ahead of the Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge on Sunday
Questions were asked about Antonio Conte when Arsenal scored three past a disastrous Blues defence back in September, but four months on it appears that those questions are now being asked of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger who faces the biggest game of the season so far on Saturday lunchtime.
Wenger takes his team to Stamford Bridge, a place where he has lost his last four league games, following the midweek defeat to Premier League strugglers Watford who came away with a surprise victory in north London.

The game against Watford was one which many expected Arsenal to win comfortably and it means the importance of Saturday’s match has now turned up a notch, with the Gunners' title chances likely to be ended if they drop points at the Bridge.
Arsenal do face a midfield injury crisis of sorts with Aaron Ramsey ruled out of the game, Mohamed Elneny away at the Africa Cup of Nations and Granit Xhaka still serving a suspension.

ARSENAL INJURIES

Hector Bellerin will almost certainly start at right-back after sitting out the defeat to Watford and his pace down the right hand side could prove vital in setting up and preventing attacks. Ramsey is not expected to be involved after injuring his hamstring in midweek while Elneny is away on international duty with Egypt.
Danny Welbeck is another player who is expected to be handed a chance in attack for the Gunners after being rested for the Watford game, and his tremendous goalscoring performance at Southampton provided a glimpse of what he can provide for the team when he’s fully fit.

Olivier Giroud and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are both likely to be in the squad despite suffering knocks in the midweek loss, while Mathieu Debuchy’s return to full training gives Wenger the option of a more natural substitute right-back compared to Gabriel.
Santi Cazorla is the only long-term absentee on the sidelines, with an expected return date pencilled in at six to eight weeks.

ARSENAL SUSPENSIONS

Granit Xhaka is serving the third of his four-game suspension.

Similarly, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will watch his third consecutive match from the stands after being charged by the FA following his misconduct towards the end of the Gunners' victory over Burnley.

ARSENAL POTENTIAL STARTING LINE-UP

Midfield is the big worry for Arsenal and with Ramsey, Elneny, Cazorla and Xhaka all out it’s likely that Oxlade-Chamberlain will partner Francis Coquelin in the middle.
Bellerin’s inevitable return at right-back paves the way for a potential right wing partnership with Theo Walcott, while Welbeck could start alongside Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez in attack
Defensively, a few supporters have encouraged the reintroduction of Kieran Gibbs to the starting XI and his pace may prove handy in keeping out Chelsea’s willing runners ahead of the slower Nacho Monreal.

CHELSEA DOSSIER

Chelsea’s nine-point lead over Tottenham and Arsenal has given them a comfortable cushion going into this one.
They were previously unbeaten in nine Premier League games against Arsenal (W6 D3) before the 3-0 defeat to the Gunners in September and will be feeling confident on home ground.
Since Antonio Conte changed his formation after that game, results have looked completely different and Chelsea have been producing better results on the pitch, keeping a relatively injury-free squad together.
They both have similar records in their past five league games, winning three, drawing once and losing one - but it was the consecutive losses to Everton and Manchester City back in December which really dented Arsenal’s title chances.
Diego Costa is their top scorer with 15 goals in the Premier League so far.

BEST OPTA MATCH FACTS

  • Arsenal have not done the double over Chelsea in the same season since 2003/04 - the season in which they last won the Premier League.

  • Arsene Wenger has lost his last four league games at Stamford Bridge. The only away ground where he's lost more in succession is Old Trafford (2009-2013).

  • The Gunners have had three players sent off in their last three Premier League games at Stamford Bridge (Gabriel, Santi Cazorla and Kieran Gibbs).

  • Diego Costa has scored in two of his four league games against Arsenal and has been booked in the other two.

  • Arsenal scored more goals in the first half against Chelsea in their last Premier League meeting than they had in their previous nine clashes with the Blues.

  • Arsenal have lost as many of their last eight Premier League games as they did in their previous 30 in the competition (3).

Chelsea Team News: Injuries, suspensions and line-up vs Arsenal

Everything you need to know ahead of the Premier League match at Stamford Bridge as the Blues welcome Arsene Wenger's side
Chelsea are nine points clear at the top of the table as they welcome their London rivals Arsenal to Stamford Bridge, who need a win to put themselves back in the hunt for the Premier League title.
Arsene Wenger's side beat Chelsea 3-0 earlier in the season at the Emirates stadium and the result was a wake up call to Antonio Conte's men, who then changed their system to play a 3-4-3 formation. This resulted in a club record breaking 13 match winning streak in the league.

A win for Antonio Conte's side could all but end Arsenal's title hopes, after they lost 2-1 at home to Watford in mid-week, as Chelsea got an impressive point away to Liverpool.

CHELSEA INJURIES

Willian and David Luiz are the biggest question marks going into Saturday's game with Arsenal as both players picked up knocks in Tuesday's match at Anfield. Luiz, who was man of the match against Liverpool, spoke about having troubles with his right knee.
Although, if they recover, Chelsea could have a full complement of players available for Arsenal and have had one of the best injury records in the league so far this season. Branislav Ivanovic has left the club for Zenit St Peterburg after he struggled to get any game time.
Charly Musonda and Kenedy have joined up with Chelsea's first-team and are available to play after the club decided not to loan them out again in January. Nathan Ake has been integrated back into the squad and impressed on his comeback against Brentford in the FA Cup.
David Luiz Chelsea

CHELSEA SUSPENSIONS

Chelsea have no players suspended for their match with Arsenal and they have had few issues with discipline all season.

In 2017 the rules alter slightly regarding suspensions for an accumulation of yellow cards, with 10 bookings now being required to get a ban. Pedro and N'Golo Kante are the closest players to Chelsea's next suspension as they moved to six bookings picked up in league and cup competition.

CHELSEA POTENTIAL STARTING LINE-UP

Conte will keep using his tried and tested line up after a positive result against Liverpool in a match that his side almost won as Diego Costa missed a penalty in the 76th minute.
Chelsea are having success by making fewer rotations than their rivals while playing in a 3-4-3 formation. Pedro and Willian have been battling it out for places along with Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas - but expect few other changes to the side that drew at Anfield.

Diego Costa will lead the line as he competes with the likes of Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez for the Premier League golden boot.

ARSENAL TEAM NEWS

Granit Xhaka will miss out through suspension after he was red carded for a dangerous tackle against Burnley this month, earning a four game ban. Santi Cazorla remains out with an ankle injury.
Wenger confirmed that Aaron Ramsey will miss out with a calf strain, but that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be fit to play despite injury concerns. Mohamed Elneny is still at the African Cup of Nations and will miss the match at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal fringe players Mathieu Debuchy and Yaya Sanogo are also set to miss out as they come up against a team with far fewer concerns.

  • Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat by Arsenal in September was their heaviest against them since April 1997 (also 3-0). They were previously unbeaten in nine Premier League games against Arsenal (W6 D3).
  • Diego Costa has scored in two of his four league games against Arsenal and has been booked in the other two.
  • The 3-0 loss to Arsenal in September was Antonio Conte’s heaviest league defeat since October 2010 when he was manager of Siena (0-3 vs Empoli).

'I don't know my players very well' - Mourinho questions mentality of Man Utd

The Portuguese feels his United players are taking longer than expected to adapt to his demands
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has questioned the mentality of some of his players, calling for them to break out of their "comfort zone".

Despite a 14-match unbeaten run in the Premier League, three consecutive draws has left United sitting sixth in the table, four points back from the final Champions League qualification place.
Mourinho has been critical of members of his squad throughout the campaign, the Portuguese claiming they are taking longer than expected to adapt to his demands.
"I don't know the players very well. I didn't know that some players need time to live with this, because it must be part of your natural habitat," he was quoted as saying in the UK media.
"Play to win, responsibility to win, cope with the pressure to win. This is something that has to belong to your natural habitat. For some guys, it doesn't.
"They also need that time to go out of their comfort zone or a zone where they are protected that we assume the objective is not to win, that also takes time."

Mourinho, whose team visit Leicester City in the league on Sunday, feels his own hunger for success has never changed, citing an expectation of continual improvement from himself and his players.
"Something in football that doesn't change, especially in my mentality, is the desire to win, the responsibility to win, the feeling that I'm never happy with myself, that I always want more from myself," Mourinho said.

"I don't accept anything that is good. You don't want good, you want very good.
"That is something I always fight for every day for the people that surround me - players, assistants, medical department, everybody."

'I can finally admit to respecting him' - football world pays tribute to Lampard

Bringing an end to an illustrious career spanning 21 years, Frank Lampard left football fans reminiscing over great memories of one of England's best ever midfielders.
The former West Ham, Chelsea, Manchester City and New York City player is best remembered for his 13 years at Stamford Bridge, during which time he won 11 major honours.
Lampard's club-record tally of 211 goals helped Chelsea to three Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League and six domestic cup triumphs.
He won 106 caps for his country, and Thursday's announcement prompted former team-mates and rivals alike to pay tribute - with Liverpool's Jamie Carragher even having a few nice words to say about his old adversary.
